Hyperliquid order settings control execution and unfilled remainders

Updated ·

Hyperliquid order settings determine the price conditions and remaining quantity an exchange order can leave on the book. Before submitting, confirm the selected market, trading account, side, size, and execution instructions against the intended trade. After submission, compare recorded fills with the requested quantity and inspect any open remainder. A confirmation message alone does not establish how much traded, what it cost, or whether another order remains active.

Recorded fills establish the executed quantity, while open orders show whether an unfilled remainder can still change the account.

Market execution and limit-price control

Market orders seek immediate execution against available liquidity, while limit orders specify an acceptable execution price. A buy limit permits execution at its limit or lower; a sell limit permits its limit or higher. Neither the displayed market price nor an order preview reserves liquidity for the submitted quantity.

A market order can trade across available price levels within its execution constraints. A limit order can remain unfilled when matching liquidity does not satisfy its price. Time-in-force settings then determine whether an unfilled quantity may remain on the book.

Account selection connects the ticket to available funds

The account holding the balance

Confirm the trading account and whether the selected market is spot or perpetual. Spot fills change token balances; perpetual fills change positions and available margin. A connected signer and the account receiving a trade are not always the same address, particularly with subaccounts. Match the account shown on the ticket with the account whose records you intend to inspect afterward.

Collateral supporting a perpetual order

For perpetuals, review the selected margin mode, leverage, and existing exposure together. Cross margin shares collateral within the scope of the account configuration; isolated margin assigns collateral to a particular position. Market restrictions and account modes affect which balances can support an order, so a total portfolio value does not establish available trading margin.

What needs checking before submission?

Confirm the market, account, direction, quantity, price conditions, and applicable order options before sending the instruction. Read the quantity unit: an asset amount and a quoted notional value describe different inputs.

Execution price and trigger price

Hyperliquid uses the mark price to trigger take-profit and stop-loss orders. The trigger activates the order; its execution settings determine whether and at what price it can fill. For a stop-limit order, inspect both the trigger and the limit. A market move through the trigger can leave the resulting limit order unfilled if available prices fall outside its permitted range.

Check any displayed slippage tolerance and estimated trading fee separately. Slippage concerns execution prices; fees apply under the relevant market schedule and account tier. The eventual charge depends on actual execution, applicable rates, and any additional authorized fee. An estimate cannot establish the final cost before the fills occur.

The submission boundary

Treat the final order review or submission control as the point to resolve discrepancies. Confirm that reduce-only matches the intended position change and that the time-in-force matches the intended remainder behavior. If the interface changes or rounds an input, read the final value before authorizing the order.

Match recorded fills to the submitted instruction

Use the order identifier to connect the instruction with its execution records. Check the market, side, filled quantity, execution prices, and recorded fees. Multiple fills may belong to one order, so reconcile their combined quantity with the submitted size rather than treating the first fill as the complete trade.

Inspect open orders separately for any remaining quantity. An order status of open indicates successful placement; triggered records activation of a conditional order. Neither status alone establishes full execution. The fill history and remaining order state answer different parts of the confirmation task.

Execution settings impose different boundaries

An immediate-or-cancel order cancels any quantity it cannot fill immediately. Time-in-force options govern execution timing and remainders, while reduce-only restricts the position change. Triggered order types add an activation condition.

Order type or setting Execution boundary
Good til canceled limit Any unfilled remainder may rest at the limit until execution or cancellation.
Post-only limit Cannot immediately match resting liquidity; a crossing submission fails the post-only condition.
Immediate-or-cancel limit Fills immediately at the limit price or better and cancels any unfilled remainder.
Reduce-only Restricts execution to reducing existing exposure rather than opening opposite exposure.
Stop-market Activation submits a market instruction subject to available liquidity and execution constraints.
Stop-limit Activation leaves execution subject to the specified limit price.

These settings do not all compete with one another. Reduce-only can accompany an otherwise supported order instruction, while a trigger and limit address separate conditions. Compare the complete instruction rather than relying on its shortest displayed label.

Why is a post-only order rejected?

A post-only order fails when its submitted price would immediately match an order already resting on the opposite side. Movement between preview and processing can therefore invalidate a price that previously appeared suitable. A rejection for immediate matching identifies a post-only constraint; a separate margin error indicates insufficient funds.

Read the recorded reason before changing the instruction. If resting execution remains the objective, reassess the limit against the current opposite quote. Removing post-only changes the permitted behavior and can allow immediate execution. A replacement price remains subject to market movement; repeated rejection does not justify assuming a submission eventually filled.

Canceling a remainder leaves earlier fills intact

Cancellation removes unexecuted quantity; it does not reverse completed trades. Inspect the cancellation result and any fills around the same time before deciding whether exposure remains. An empty open-order list establishes no remaining listed orders for that account and scope, but it does not establish a flat position.

A remaining perpetual position continues to carry market exposure. Funding rates also affect payments while a position remains open at the applicable funding interval. These later balance changes belong to the continuing position, rather than changing the historical quantity an earlier order executed.

Hyperliquid: the short answers

Why does the form reject a price with extra decimals?

Prices and quantities must satisfy the market's precision rules. Price validity combines significant-figure and decimal-place limits, with a separate allowance for integer prices. Size precision follows the asset's configured size decimals. A visually small adjustment can therefore produce an invalid instruction.

How is the average execution price calculated across several fills?

The average execution price weights each fill price by its executed quantity. Multiply each price by its quantity, add those products, and divide by the total filled quantity. An ordinary average ignores differences in fill size and can give the wrong result. Account for trading fees separately.

Does changing leverage change an order's asset quantity?

Changing leverage changes the margin requirement for a specified position size rather than multiplying an explicitly specified asset quantity. Confirm the final quantity whenever adjusting leverage or using a sizing control. The margin calculation uses position size, mark price, and leverage.

Is a buy order always an instruction to open a long position?

A perpetual buy can reduce an existing short position. Its effect depends on the starting position and executed quantity; sufficient buying can close the short and create long exposure unless an applicable restriction prevents that change. Read the position direction alongside the order side.

Can an API response say "ok" when an order fails?

The outer API response can report "ok" while an individual order status contains an error. Inspect the returned status for each order instead of treating the outer response as execution confirmation. Batched requests also require handling errors that apply to the entire payload.

Why can a resting perpetual order fail a later margin check?

The matching engine checks margin again when a resting perpetual order reaches execution. Account conditions can change after placement, including through price movements. Passing the initial placement check therefore does not reserve an unconditional right to fill later.

What prevents a limit order from filling when the chart touches its price?

A chart price touching the limit does not establish enough matching liquidity for that order. The book matches orders using price-time priority, so earlier orders at the same price can receive available execution first. Trade history and the order's remaining size establish its actual execution.

Will a fixed-size stop-loss order grow with my position?

A stop-loss order with a specifically configured quantity does not automatically resize when the position changes. Compare that quantity with the remaining position after other trades. Position-associated orders configured to cover the entire position instead attempt to close the position present at triggering.
